Alick is a lecturer in biomedical engineering at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), Blantyre, Malawi. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (cum laude) at the University of Malawi—The Polytechnic (now called MUBAS) in 2010, and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Jeonbuk National University, South Korea, in 2021. His research focuses on the application of computational methods to understand self-organizing dynamics in cell biology, specifically via intracellular phase separation in health and disease. His overall goal is to combine experimental and computational techniques to elucidate the dynamics of intracellular phase separation thereby opening opportunities for drug targets for previously undruggable cases. Alick is also passionate about the application of basic engineering principles in designing low-cost medical devices for resource-constrained settings. To this end, he has worked on the development of low-cost phototherapy devices currently being used across hospitals in Malawi. Alick has also been involved in the development of a modern bedside vital signs monitor (the IMPALA monitor) as part of the IMPALA Project, a consortium of Malawian and European partners funded by the UNDP. The IMPALA bedside monitor completed phase one clinical trials at Queen Elizabeth and Zomba Central Hospitals and phase two trials at Zomba Central Hospital. It is currently in use across hospitals in Malawi, Rwanda and Tanzania. In the IMPALA project, Alick acted as a technical coordinator and biomedical engineer (MUBAS partner). In his free time, Alick enjoys listening to classical music, gardening, and birdwatching.
