Dr Florence Thomo is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics Education at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS). She holds a PhD in Curriculum and Teaching Studies. She is a mathematics teacher educator, researcher and consultant in Mathematics Education. She is also a member of the MUBAS Moderation and Appeals Committee for the School of Science and Technology. Before joining MUBAS (then the Malawi Polytechnic), Florence had served as a Mathematics and mathematics Education Lecturer for 9 years at Domasi college of Education and for 10 years as a secondary school Mathematics and Biology teacher after she had served as a primary school teacher for 9 years.
She has vast experience in providing preservice as well as in-service teacher education for secondary and primary school teachers in the field of Mathematics Education. She has worked in collaboration with Ministry of Education, the Malawi Institute of Education and other universities in provision of Continuous Profession Development (CPD) to primary and secondary school teachers of Mathematics in Malawi. She has also served as a Mathematics Education specialist for the National Numeracy Programme and Foundational Numeracy and Literacy project by the Ministry of Education. Further, she has worked with the Malawi National Examinations Board for 10 years in Moderating Mathematics and Additional Mathematics Examination papers.
Her major contribution is the Excel and Succeed Mathematics textbooks and Teachers’ Guides for Forms one to four. She is also a Co-Principal investigator in CODE context matters research project funded by the Canadian Government. Besides, Florence has served as an External Examiner for a PhD thesis at Rhodes University in South Africa and External Examiner for Undergraduate Mathematics and Science Education programmes at the University of Malawi.
