Mabvuto Phula is a Malawian Land Economy/ Land management/ Land Access and Resettlement/ livelihoods restoration/Compensation Expert. He helps government, international and national consulting firms and organisations in land access and resettlement, Land acquisition, land management, stakeholder engagement and negotiations, social economic surveys – at the national and sub-national levels – to deliver on their resettlement-related and in urban/peri-urban land administration objectives, providing bespoke services and training effectively. He also works for the Malawi University of Business and Applied sciences as Lecturer in Land Economy. Starting over 18 years ago, Mabvuto has worked in Malawi with the Government in various landed projects providing hands-on support at the high levels of the public and private sector as well as to remote rural communities– creating, managing and implementing Resettlement planning, compensation valuation, stakeholder engagements, livelihood restoration, negotiation processes and social economic surveys and supporting land reforms and governance issues.Having worked in the Ministry of Lands before, providing land administration services to the public, Mabvuto knows the challenges related to land matters and the need for a proper application of laws and policy to solve resettlement and land related matters.
Many years working in developing Resettlement Action Plans have helped Mabvuto’s work to reflect a unique understanding of the concerns of resettlement and land access in Malawi and elsewhere and the role that stakeholders and communities play in managing resettlements during and after development of the resettlement action Plans. He has a vast knowledge in engaging communities and stakeholders in issues related to land.
Mabvuto holds a M.Sc. International Real Estate from Royal Agricultural University’s school of Real Estate and a B ED in Geography and Mathematics from the University of Malawi. Currently he is doing research on the impact of the Malawi Land Reform on agricultural productivity, land tenure security and economic development.
