RSU Boosts Research Capacity Through Horizon Europe Workshop

Two representatives from the Research Support Unit (RSU) recently attended a two-day Horizon Europe training workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa, gaining key skills to strengthen the institution’s capacity in research funding and project management.

The training focused on practical skills such as identifying and interpreting funding calls, developing competitive proposals, managing grant applications, and handling awarded projects. Participants also discussed ways to transfer these skills to colleagues at their institutions so the benefits of the workshop extend beyond the attendees.

“Attending this training was an important step for RSU. It showed us where we can plug into international research networks and what it really takes to make our proposals competitive,” said George Sinjani , one of the representatives.

By the end of the training, the team walked away with clearer strategies and practical skills to better support researchers at every stage, from spotting a suitable call to managing a funded project. The sessions also helped them understand how to share this knowledge back home in a way that benefits the wider institution.
