The Fundamentals of Grant Proposal Writing Workshop

On 2 December 2025, the Research Support Unit (RSU) coordinated a workshop, offered both virtually and in person, where research management consultant Riana Coetsee equipped researchers with practical skills for crafting competitive grant proposals.

The interactive sessions focused on key elements of successful grant proposals, including structuring proposals, demonstrating research impact, preparing accurate budgets, and understanding the peer review process. Participants also explored strategies for marketing their research, profiling themselves as competitive applicants, and identifying appropriate funding opportunities.

The workshop featured practical exercises that allowed attendees to apply what they learned, from overcoming writer’s block to highlighting the impact of their research in ways that resonate with funders. Common pitfalls in proposal writing were discussed, equipping participants with tools to improve the quality and competitiveness of their applications.

Ms. Coetsee emphasized the importance of combining strong writing, strategic planning, and an understanding of funders’ expectations to secure research funding successfully.

Attendees left the workshop with knowledge and practical skills to strengthen their proposals, boost their researcher profiles, and enhance their chances of obtaining funding for future projects.

Ms. Coetsee, who holds postgraduate qualifications from the Université de Nantes, France, and Stellenbosch University, South Africa, brings extensive experience in research management and grant proposal support, making her guidance especially valuable for researchers at all career stages.
